Chronograph Functions

The main types of chronograph explained by their dials

How to read and use a chronograph watch by means of explaining the functions on the dial. The majority of the links are for different types of chronographs and what their practical uses are. There is also a section showing the three main types of mechanism, and a section on how to operate the chronograph based on what type of mechanism it is.

Are replicated from a booklet that was originally published in 1951 by the Swiss Federation of Watch Manufacturers. Some of the functions therefore may be a bit out of date, such are recording telephone times. In the past callers were billed at 3 or 5 minute intervals, which is what a chronograph could be used for - today they bill you by the second. Chronograph

A chronograph is a timepiece or watch with both timekeeping and stopwatch functions. Pocket watch chronographs were produced as early as the 18th century but did not become popular until the 1820s.[1] The term 'Chronograph' is often confused with the term 'Chronometer' which in some cases designates a watch that has received a precision certification. The Marine chronometer was an accurate timepiece used to enable celestial navigation.

Types

There are many types of chronograph .
Analog chronographs show both time and stopwatch functions with analog hands. Typically the center hand will be used for stopwatch functions, while subdials may indicate seconds, stopwatch minutes and hours and (in some quartz chronographs) tenths or hundredths of a second. A variation of this chronograph is the Bull-one head, with the movement rotated 90 degrees, placing the crown and buttons at the top of the watch rather than the traditional location on side.

Digital chronographs use a digital display for both timekeeping and stopwatch functions, either with separate displays or by switching modes on a single display. Analog-digital chronographs have a standard analog watch with permanent center seconds and a separate digital display that usually operates independently of the analog section.

A fallback will reset to zero and then continue to run when the reset button is pushed while the stopwatch is running. In contrast, most mechanical chronograph will reset to zero only when the stopwatch is stopped.
